If you are looking for a way to incorporate a little hands on science into your classroom, you might want to consider hatching chicks in your room!
I am fortunate to have a farmer husband who does help me with a lot of the supplies and knowledge but that doesn't mean that YOUR classroom cannot have the same experience. I would advise clearing the idea with your principal first before going and purchasing any materials. Most materials we bought through a local feed store but many can be bought online. You may even be able to get a grant to help cover some of the cost! This unit does NOT give instructions on the actual hatching process. This resource is for teaching students the anatomy and vocabulary behind the process and what is happening each day.
Included in this resource:
* 3 different journal pages (you can differentiate to your students
ability or your grade level!)
* 2 color anchor charts (embryo and hen) they are labeled for you!
* 2 assessments for each diagram (with and without a word bank)
* 2 chick life cycle diagram (in color and labeled, in b/w without
labels so you can use as an assessment for your students)
* 2 countdown calendars (color and b/w)
* 2 daily growth cards (color and b/w) that detail what is happening
inside the egg each day--I use this information to create a large
chart for the class to help keep track.
* 18 color pocket chart vocabulary cards
* 18 color vocabulary word cards (definitions included!)
* 1 unit assessment (answer key included!)
* 1 word search (answer key included!)
* 1 decodable book with color photos (all about chicken facts!)
PLEASE NOTE, this resource does not include any supplies to complete the experiment like eggs, incubator, feed, etc. Buyer is responsible for purchasing these materials. This unit COULD be used and not complete the 21 day experiment. If you are conducting the experiment, remember to watch your temperature and humidity closely!
I wish you the best of luck with this experiment. It is something my class talks about all year and is one of their FAVORITE activities in 2nd grade! Some of the vocabulary may be a little advanced for K-1 but CAN be adapted to your classroom. Please look at the preview before purchasing for your classroom.

This is probably hands-down one of my FAVORITE lessons. At first it began by simply being a "how to" writing project for my kiddos. It then went into a hands-on science experiment where my kids were able to "experience" what it is like to prepare a body for burial like the ancient Egyptians.
This activity has been tested and tweaked several times. I have had so much success with it, I have used it for my formal observation. I have had our district PR rep come and take pictures to use on our district website. This activity is student run with very little assistance needed by you the teacher.
Included are several graphic organizers, writing pages, and rubric. I have included pocket chart strips for each step. I have included a step by step set up for the night and day before the experiment. I have included a link to my blog where I show how I ran the experiment with pictures for each step.
Seriously, this is SO easy and SO much fun! The only thing that is "seasonal" for this activity is a pumpkin. I am sure you could be creative and use something else but this is what worked for me!!
This license is for one classroom distribution only.

This unit is all about the Ring Tailed Lemur. I like being able to engage my students in these research projects during our ELA block. I can expose them to challenging vocabulary, begin research projects and encourage their writing, while also introducing them to simplistic oral presentations.
**This is the UK version with metric measurements included. The US version with standard measurements is available.
Included in this resource:
* glossary
* pocket chart vocabulary cards (just print on cardstock and you will be set!)
* color poster
* profile card (a quick breakdown of facts)
* protection plan (how are we trying to save this animal)
* bio card (a lengthy profile with sentences and bold faced vocabulary cards)
* 2 anchor charts with color photos (digging deeper and save the species)
* KWL chart with a color photo
* Decodable book with color photos (each book is 4 pages long and only a half sheet to save on printing!)
* Text based evidence (A question that sends kids back into the text to search for evidence)
* A flipbook (A great way to display their knowledge of each animal)
* Word search (a fun way to end each animal. Answer key included.)
* Quiz (Perfect if you need a quick assessment grade. Answer key included. The quiz is only 4 questions.)
* interactive notebook pages
* differentiated book reports and rubrics (oral presentation optional)
